Ontario Energy Incentives
Ontario currently has an abundance of energy and energy efficiency incentives which are available at the provincial, regional, utility, and federal levels. However, since Doug Ford cancelled the GreenOn Solar Rebate Program, there are only a few opportunities left to save on solar power.

Provincial Energy Incentives
Save On Energy Program
The Save on Energy Program, offered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), is the largest incentive program offered in Ontario. It covers a wide range energy efficiency upgrades including:
- ENERGY STAR Central Air Conditioners
- Air Source Heat Pumps
- Smart Thermostats
- + More
Government of Ontario AffordAbility Fund
The AfordAbility Fund is a $100 million fund intended to help everyday homeowners reduce their energy usage. Ontario residents can apply to receive a free:
- Home Energy Kit (with Energy Star light bulbs, power bar, and/or faucet aerators)
- Visit from a Home Energy Advisor (which may include free Energy Star appliances)
- Insulation and/or Energy Star heat pump
Although the program is NOT intended for low-income earners, the free services you receive is dependent on your net income and your average energy bill.
Regional Energy Incentives
Toronto Live Green Perks Program
The Live Green Perks Program is a free discount card that can be used towards the purchase of various green technologies and events from businesses within the City of Toronto. As of 2019, there are currently discounts available for solar photovoltaic systems, solar bonds, LED lighting, Energy Star appliances and much more!
Utility Energy Incentives
Enbridge Gas has several rebate programs available for residential homeowners in Ontario. The first program is called the Home Energy Conservation Program where you can earn up to $5,000 in rebates for the purchase of a variety energy efficiency upgrades including:
- Air sealing
- Energy Star windows and doors
- Water heaters
- + More
The second incentive program is Smart Thermostat Program. This program allows you to claim a $100 rebate for the purchase of a Smart Thermostat. The final program offered by Enbridge is the Home Winterproofing Program whereby low income earners can apply to receive free energy efficiency services including new insulation and draft sealing.
Enbridge Gas also has several Commercial & Industrial Rebates available on their website.
The First Nations Conservation Program is a available to First Nations persons living in participating First Nations communities across Ontario. Qualifying residents can receive free energy efficiency technologies and installations including:
- Energy Star Light Bulbs and Appliances
- Programmable Thermostats
- Block Heater Timers
- Pipe Insulation and Wrap
- + More
Hydro One also a comprehensive Heating and Cooling Rebate Section on their website open to all of their customers. Homeowners can claim up to $4,000 in rebates on equipment such as ENERGY STAR air conditioners, air-source heat pumps (ASHP), adaptive thermostats and more!
Union Gas offers two energy efficiency incentive programs for their customers. The first and largest program (up to $5,000) is the Home Reno Rebate for various energy upgrades including:
- Energy Assessments
- Heating Systems
- Air Sealing
- Windows & Doors
- + More
The second rebate program is the Home Weatherization Program for low income earners looking to get free home energy upgrades. There also also more than a dozen Commercial and Industrial Incentives available for Union Gas customers.
Federal & Other Energy Incentives
EnergyHub.org Solar Cash Incentive
The Solar Cash Incentive offered by EnergyHub.org can be claimed in addition to any rebate program offered on this page. The total rebate amount is relatively small ($152), but it’s super easy to claim.
Federal Tax Provision for Clean Energy Equipment
The Federal Tax Provision for Clean Energy Equipment is a tax policy offered through the federal government that allows Canadian businesses to fully expense their clean energy equipment purchases (solar included). This means a CCA rate of 100% and the abolishment of the first year rule.
